サンパウロで開催されたIUPAC2017に行ってきました。
フランクフルトまで11時間のフライト，そこからサンパウロまでさらに11時間のフライトです。時差は12時間，ちょうど地球の反対側です。

サンパウロで25年ぶりにRochel 君と会いました。彼は岐阜大学時代に１年間だけですがブラジルからの留学生として研究室に所属しました。その後，英国のオックスフォード大学で博士号を取り，カナダで研究し，スペインで教授となり，今はブラジル屈指の名門大学の教授です。

僕の講演の後は彼の同僚や学生と一緒に昼食を一緒に取り，とても楽しい時間を過ごしました。



彼が一冊の彼の著書をくれました。400頁弱のポルトガル語の本で何とタイトルが "As cartas de Tsuji" （辻󠄀の文字）といい，僕の名前が入っているのです。これは2017年の第2版で2011年に初版が出たそうです。スペイン語にも翻訳されているそうですが，英語版はないそうです。化学とは全く関係のない「歴史小説」で，辻󠄀という名の科学者がいて，その学生が会社を設立するという話だそうです。Rochel は化学（科学）の力でブラジルを豊かにしたいそうで，化学の研究も一流ですが，それ以外にベンチャー企業の設立の方法なども研究しているそうです。また，小説も数冊上梓しているそうです。会食の写真で僕の右隣の女子学生はRochel の勧めで日本に興味を持ち，来年から信州大学に留学するそうで日本のことをいろいろ質問していました。




Rochel に本のあらすじを尋ねていたところ、下記のような連絡がありました：
　The book "The letters of Tsuji" is meant to take technological entrepreneurship (how to create a technology company from research) to the academic community. The book is based on a novel (fiction) where a professor named Joao with his students will open a company. The novel creates the context so I can introduce technical information (see inside the book many technical texts in special areas).
　Tsuji in the book is a Japanese immigrant scientist in Brazil. Tsuji is the mentor of Joao and he will teach Joao how to deal with the challenge of opening a company. In the beginning of the story Tsuji handles a box with seven letters containing wise and beautiful messages which Joao will open one at a time during the story.
　 I gave the name to the main character because of you and your  strong and important influence in my life.

たった1年の岐阜での滞在がこんなに大きく広がるなんて，大学は良いものだなぁとしみじみ思いました。
サンパウロは遠かったけれど，行って本当によかった。 辻
